July 2026 Newsletter: The Big Conversation on Care is now live 

On Wednesday 29 July, Baroness Louise Casey, Chair of the Independent Commission on Adult Social Care, launched The Big Conversation on Care alongside the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. The event was held at Jewish Care in North London. 

The Big Conversation on Care is an opportunity for people across England to share their views and help shape the Commission’s recommendations. Between now and April 2027, it will ask people what they want and expect from a future National Care Service, including some of the hardest questions: who it should support, what families should reasonably be expected to do, and how the country should pay for care in a fair and sustainable way. These choices affect us all, so it’s important that the whole country has a say before they are made.

The Big Conversation is designed to reach millions of people across the country, from every walk of life. Through our online platform, delivered by Make.org, people can share their own ideas, respond to others’ ideas, and join the wider discussion. Alongside the online conversation, a nationally representative group of people, chosen at random, will work through the trade-offs together as part of the Public Panel on Care. They will consider the evidence, test their thinking with people taking part in the wider conversation, and develop conclusions that will feed directly into the Casey Commission’s recommendations. 

Since launch, we have already seen more than 70,000 votes, and thousands of people have submitted their ideas through the platform, this is a powerful start to the Big Conversation and we are delighted by the response so far. We are hugely grateful to everyone who has taken the time to contribute or shared information about the Big Conversation through their networks. We want to hear from even more voices in the weeks and month ahead. 

We know that not everyone will be able to or want to take part online. We have dedicated activity planned, working with voluntary and community partners, who will hold conversations across England with people who draw on care and support, unpaid carers, people who work in adult social care and others that might not take part online.  

We have created a new section of the Commission’s website dedicated to the Big Conversation on Care. It brings together everything people need to know about the conversation, including why it is happening, the different ways to take part, answers to frequently asked questions, and how people’s views will help inform the Commission’s recommendations.

As part of the launch, Baroness Casey wrote in The Times about why adult social care can no longer be left in the “too-hard” drawer. She reflects on the people she has met who are navigating a system that is too often confusing, unfair and under pressure, and argues that the country now needs to face the hard choices honestly.
